Transform your kid’s room with the latest whimsical woodland look
A whimsical woodland bedroom scheme can transform the space into an enchanting, magical retreat that inspires imagination and creativity.
As the evenings get dark earlier and the leaves start to turn, there’s something satisfying about drawing the curtains, lighting the lamps and tucking your kids up in bed at night in a cosy room. Even better if the room is decorated in a style reminiscent of the outside – think enchanted forest wallpapers, woodland greens, rich browns and soft mushroom pinks, taupes and greys. If you’re keen to try a whimsical woodland interior scheme, check out our 5 essential tips on how to get the look…
1. Choose a colour palette
A soft, earthy colour palette will evoke the sense of a tranquil forest and provide a soothing backdrop for either play or rest. Think muted greens, browns, soft yellows, warm pinks and earthy neutrals. If you’re unsure about using colour on the walls, try pairing a soft white – we love Yes Colours’ passionate warm white with its earthy clay tone – with a gentle leafy wall decal. The beauty of decals is that they can easily be switched up as and when you decide to change a scheme. Or, if you’re feeling daring, decorate a feature wall using a woodland-themed wallpaper like above.
2. Select the right furniture
Choose furniture that reflects rustic charm, such as wooden pieces – and don’t be afraid to mix and match furniture from different eras - we love finding beautiful second-hand vintage pieces on sites such as eBay, Gumtree and Facebook MarketPlace. Not only is second-hand great for the environment, but it tends to be handy on the bank balance too which, when you know your child is likely to be banging their toys left right and centre into their wardrobe, bed and chest of drawers, will help you feel a little less precious about any knocks and dents that will inevitably occur.
3. Opt for layered textiles
Whether it’s changing up the bedlinen, adding a new window covering or reupholstering cushions or soft seating, adding a playful mix of patterned textiles with a touch of woodland whimsy can transform a plain room into a warm, creative space full of magical charm and texture. Layer different textiles such as knitted throws, fluffy pillows and soft curtains to add comfort as well as depth to the decor. For bed linen, look out for flora and fauna designs - companies such as Dunelm and The White Company have some beautiful options.
4. Add a cosy space
We love a reading nook in a kids’ bedroom or playroom – like the one above by instagrammer ourhoppyhouse. It makes the perfect spot for encouraging a bit of downtime and to help foster a love of reading and entice little ones away from their screens. Adding some soft seating like bean bags or floor cushions in nature-inspired fabrics under a canopy will work wonders in a whimsical woodland bedroom scheme.
5. Get creative with accessories and lighting
Add whimsical woodland animal motifs in your scheme to finish the look. Use wall decals of foxes, owls and rabbits; hang whimsical artwork that features forest scenes; add soft, warm lighting to make the space feel warm and inviting and look out for bedside and pendant lights shaped like mushrooms, forest animals and acorns to perfect the look. We love this bedroom designed by AMC Design for her client’s tween with its woodland designed wallpaper, soft pink toned accessories, layered textiles and playful lighting.
