5 simple steps to creating a reading nook
Looking for advice on how to design a comfortable, light-filled reading space that evokes a sense of fun? Read on for our essential design guide below
Although true bookworms can read anywhere for hours on end, there’s a reason why a cushioned armchair by a roaring fire or a sunlounger looking out to sea are ripe reading spots – they ooze a sense of relaxation and comfort. Now, if like me you’re unable to just jump on an aeroplane to get your latest reading fix, be consoled by the fact that you probably already have the perfect spot in your home calling out to be transformed into a reading nook. For those in the design stage of their reno project, consider constructing a bench under a window or go all in by designing a library wall with an alcove cushioned seating area. However, if you don’t have the budget, or are just looking to work with your existing interior space, a plush floor cushion with the right lighting could go a long to creating the perfect spot.
Whether you want to create a kid’s reading nook, somewhere just for adults, or simply a space the whole family can enjoy, we’ve got you covered. Follow our 5 simple steps on how to create the perfect reading place to be able to settle down and enjoy a good book. But beware, if you couldn’t put that novel down before, you’ll definitely struggle now!
1. Choose the right lighting

Getting the lighting right is key to a successful reading nook. Harsh, direct lighting will make reading uncomfortable. Instead, opt for soft, warm lighting positioned by the reader to help create a warm, inviting space. Jo Plant, Head of Design at Pooky, advises using a bulb with at least 450 lumens to help combat eye strain and choosing flexible and adjustable lighting which you can bend and angle so you can direct light at your book more easily.
2. Go for natural light

There is nothing less enjoyable than spending time in a dark, dingy space – especially when you’re trying to hunker down with a good book. We’d always advise setting up your reading nook next to a large window. Not only will the abundance of natural light (yes, we know the UK winter has been especially dull and rainy these last months, but spring is definitely on its way!) help with reading, but it’ll provide an interesting view when your eyes need to take a breather. We love this sun-soaked bench seat placed in front of an oversized picture window overlooking the owner’s garden – which is equally enjoyable at night!
3. Make books accessible

Any avid reader knows that a reading spot can get messy VERY quickly. A small pile can quickly lead to a large mound of books – which doesn’t make for a clutter-free, clean space = calm mind reading scenario. Which is where book organisation comes into its element. Whether that’s a wicker basket, a simple book display unit or a built-in wall of shelving, you need to make sure the book storage you install is easily accessible for your little bookworm. We love this reading space designed by Sonya Lee Architect, which has been incorporated into a wall of custom-built cabinetry in the little girl’s bedroom.
4. Design a fun space

While you can’t force a love of reading in your little ones, reading for fun is definitely something that you can nurture, and what better way than to create a fun reading nook for them to camp out in? Which is exactly what Interior Design Masters star and founder of interior design studio & Then They Went Wild Nicki Bamford-Bowes did for her son: “I designed this space over 10 years ago now and it has stood the test of time. We built a reading nook in the eaves with a ladder which we called the ‘story corner’ and we would climb up there together to read the special selection of books we saved for our quiet time. We included a clear perspex bubble to the design to give the nook a view out across the room from up high. It was fun and it also allowed light to travel through into the room from the Velux rooflight. Underneath we also included a second hidden nook with a curtain, for playing / hiding. He’s now 13 and still loves that space. Apparently the bubble is not going anywhere and I love that!”
5. Add in comfy seating

Comfortable seating, such as an armchair for adults or low-cushioned seating for kids, is a must when creating a reading space. If you’re building in a reading bench, don’t forget to fit an upholstered seat pad. Plus, layering up a nook with cushions will instantly result in an inviting place to sit and relax. We love how influencer Amee has made the most out of a disused corner in her kid’s room and created this stunning nook with under-seat storage and shelves for easily accessible books and toys, adding in cushions for extra comfort!
